Dream-Catchers: The “Engine Man’s” Dream Journal

Dream-Catchers: The “Engine Man’s” Dream Journal.
It’s almost alarming how excited I felt tonight to discover another human being who (like me) keeps a dream journal and draws the images from his dreams in them.
The drawings above are from 1939, and were part of a dream journal kept by a man who was some sort of insect expert for the Smithsonian. I must learn more about all of this. Will report back. I also discovered something called the Dreamstage Museum in VT, created by this man who seems incredibly cool: Dr. Allan J. Hobson.
Oh Waiter? There’s A Boob In My Soup!

For those who are new to this blahhhhg, here’s the gist: Every morning w/o fail I draw whatever I dreamt the night before. I use magic markers, nail polish, and white-out, and they’re all in a big bound black sketch book. Kay? K. Now…
Today’s Dream Drawing features soup, boobs, and a sick lady. I don’t really care what those symbols are SUPPOSED to mean. Don’t put much stock (pardon the pun) in those universal dream symbol interpretations. But the words within this dream drawing DO interest me. They’re kind of hard to read, though, so allow me… “She thought she was gonna be sick, til she realized she already was.”
A strange sentiment to be sure. But I kind of get it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve invested hours & hours of worrying into some future event (both those of the “real” variety and those I only IMAGINED might happen) only to realize later that the worrying I did was far worse than the events themselves. The lesson?
DON’T WORRY. BE SOUPY.
That soup special comes w/one “trivia tit-bit”:
The only reason I wound up putting her boobs IN the soup bowl in this drawing is because Facebook has given me shit recently for (GASP!) nipples; yessssss….. for showing the dreaded nipple in a drawing or two. And I’m too tired and too old to fight the good fight. Besides– restrictions like this often lead to wonderfully quirky choices we never would’ve considered or just plain wandered into had “the man” not been holding us back. So thanks Zuckerberg!
Wait! Real quick- I’m-onna learn ya sumpin ‘for ya go, son!
Tonight I learned that the study of dreams is called ONEIROLOGY! (Who knew???) And I’d like to thank this guy (Hank Green) for learnin’ me about it on “Crash Course.” Check out his video below:

Here is a cool dream-centric theory that I like. It seems like the bastard child of Native American spirituality and coo-coo bananas parallel universe theories. Yay!
Waiting 4 The Man 2 Float By In the Water

Despite the title, This dream actually has nothing to do with Brian Williams. I dreamt it (and drew it) weeks ago. But I just finished coloring it today, and the scene reminded me of his quote about seeing a dead man float past his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
I miss Walter Cronkite.
Those long cigarette-looking things she’s holding were sort of “floaties” that I was desperately trying to get to my mom. At the time I dreamt this I was visiting her for the holidays.
She still smokes even though she has to take oxygen treatments at home, and I don’t know HOW many times she’s gone to the hospital for bronchitis, pneumonia, and COPD. In the dream, the long, white tubes were (I’m 90% certain) inspired by her cigarettes and all of the long plastic tubes that stick out of her oxygen tank.
The few times I’ve had the balls to talk to her about her smoking, she’s actually said (with a straight face) that her lung problems were more likely being caused by small grains of sand.
She lives near the beach. And farrrrrr away from reality.

Today’s dream drawing features Tom Bolster, who cooked me a grilled hoagie roll, then morphed into Matt Scott, who offered to cook me two scrambled eggs, who then turned out (when I drew the dream) not to look like Tom or Matt, but Stirling Gardner, who must’ve been on my (subconscious) mind.
Strained Glass Window

Stained glass windows are beautiful, to be sure, but (as far as functionality goes) they’re not ideal if you actually want to see what’s on the other side of them. Any “true” window knows enough to get out of the way and let you see who might be approaching outside the building, and get an accurate image of what the intruder looks like. But not a stained glass window. A stained glass window says demandingly, “Look at MEEEEE!”
I was raised by a beautiful stained glass window.
Luckily, I discovered that the window from whence I came has three teeeeeny-tiny glass panes in it which are void of any color or decoration, through which one can occasionally catch precious glimpses of…
reality.
This secret knowledge is how I managed to maintain the miracle of NORMALCY.
A SMALL but significant degree of it, anyway. Just enough to hold all the crazy colored glass in place.

One response to this dream drawing that has stayed with me is:
“Cool, she can make lettuce with her cooch!”
Yes, exactly what I was going for.
Still, could he be onto something?
I decided years ago that having children was not for me, but could I harbor some deep-seeded desire to give birth to a happy, healthy, salad bar?
Could my dreams be telling me to eat more veggies? To make an appointment with my cooch doctor? Or to just make a salad bar with my cooch?
All you can eat.
Hmmmm.
I didn’t THINK I was drawing lettuce. I thought I was drawing a blanket. A bright, green blanket that would conveniently COVER her cooch.
How very “lapsed Catholic” of me.
Then again, I DO love the occasional crouton. Some bacon bits…

I haven’t posted any dream drawings in a while, so I’m posting three at once. That’s just like me – to disappear quietly and then reappear days later with a flair and try to win back your trust and admiration by desperately overcompensating with lots of home-made presents- posting too much in one sitting.
This one is called “A Bridge To A Bridge”
And here we have “Heathen Hannah”
And lastly, “Software Update: OS
Raccoon!”
Seriously… I really could post a dream drawing every DAY, but would you even WANT that? Let me know what you think. I truly am interested. Weekly? Your call.
Thank you for coming here and please subscribe! Repost! I need you!

Movies With My Eyes Closed – My Dreams Are My “Night Stories”
Posted on October 22, 2014 Leave a Comment
Decided to post three (yes, THREE!) dream drawings in one sitting tonight since I haven’t posted in a while.
I have to say, it’s been a good stretch for my night-stories this week. (That’s kind of how I think of my dreams- as “night stories.” I also like the term “movies with my eyes closed”).
For the last week or so, anywhere from two to SIX dreams have still been accessible to me upon waking. :😴😋😊
